file Extentions

FILES can be found in FOLDERS and are opened by PROGRAMS.
Different file extentions determine what program will open them.
Here are some important file extentions to remember.

Writing

- doc (a writing file used with Microsoft Word)
- xls (a writing and mathematical file used with Microsoft Excel - spreadsheets)
- ppt/pps (a presentation file used with Microsoft PowerPoint)
- txt (a simple writing file that can be opened by all computers - the program doesn't matter.
- pdf (a file that cannot be edited)
Compressing

- zip (file that has been compressed using WinZip)
- rar (file that has been compressed using RAR compression)

Movie files

- mpg/mpeg
- mp4
- rmp (Real Movie file)
- avi (can be played by most movie players)
- mov (Quicktime movie file)
- wmp (Windows Movie Player file)
- divx (DivX movie file - can be played by most movie players)

Music files

- mp3 (compressed music file - most common)
- rma (Real Media)
- mp2
- wav (uncompressed music file - like a track off a CD - very large)
- ogg
- wma (Windows Media)

Pictures

- jpg/jpeg (picture or photo file - most common)
- bmp (picture to edit file)
- png (picture to edit file)
